Unit 10 - Exposure and Focus on Form

UNIT 10

EXPOSURE AND FOCUS ON FORM

After being studying English for so many years I have noticed that we may learn grammar, structures and vocabulary perfectly but if we do not practice it or are exposure to it, by hearing or reading it, there will not be a noticeable outcome, since it has to do with some important points.

First, language acquisition or the step to pick it up is necessary to be involved in a variety, interesting and even difficult language to learn unconsciously, silent period, and so be able to work out its meaning and form.

Second and essential is to interact with others, mainly with native speakers, to experiment and try structures, chunks and vocabulary we may not learn in books. So, to this in class it would be useful to show videos, where native speakers role play a grammar point or vocabulary, to analyze with the whole class.

Thirdly, and not less important is to focus on form by paying attention to features of language such as pronunciation, word order, affixes, spelling, etc. However, before exposing our students on the form of language, we need to observe their learning style to know how to help them to notice forms of a new target language. Then we may adapt graded readers to do not frustrate them with vocabulary that is difficult to understand or even get the meaning in context.

To sum up, there are many tasks we as teachers can apply to expose students to the target language and to make them focus on form to accomplish a good and understandable communication approach.
